Back in the day, before most of you were born, any files you wanted to share were kept in hidden directories and shared via ftp.
Then IRC became the way to request images or software. These files were accessed through ftp server software loaded on someone’s home pc.
Then Napster came along and changed the way things were done. This group sharing attracted the attention of the knuckle-draggers in the recording industry who immediately sued large sharing sites -understandable.
Then the RIAA/MPAA resorted to terrorist tactics and started suing anyone that they thought might, under any circumstances, in the past, present or future, share any media file. –inexcusable.
(The purely fanciful numbers the recording industry claim as losses have no basis in reality, but as long as Hollywood owns people like VP Biden this will continue unabated.)
They got Napster, Kazaa and Pirate Bay but they can’t stop people from trading files.
Now you can share files via your G-mail account with g2Peer.
Share photo, music, video files on your PC with other people using Gmail channel. Have access to your PC files at any point of the world using Gmail. No need to install on both ends, just use ?_list or ?_download commands sent from any e-mail client or web mail application.
This method requires a certain degree of personal contact just like IRC, but it will also require more manpower than the recording industry would be willing to hire to prevent it.
Instead the RIAA/MPAA will rely on the absurd penalties afforded by the courts and hope they can scare people in to submission.
The recording industry are the same folks who fought cassette tape recorders, claiming that the ability to record songs off the radio would do irreparable damage to the industry. –I notice that the same fat-cats are still driving expensive cars and living in expensive homes so I guess maybe they were wrong.
