Global Translator Plug-in for Wordpress

I’ve started using the Global Translator plug-in for Wordpress and have discovered an interesting side effect.

When I Googled for some photos I have posted on Flickr that were receiving most of their hits from an unknown referrer I discovered that the Spanish translation of this site was also among the search results. –I assume that this is by design, and that the only languages that will show in the search engines are the ones that people have used.

The Global Translator plug-in gives you a choice of four online translation services. I selected Google Translation Services because of the number of languages it supports. –Although the odds on someone who speaks Galician or Maltese stopping by are mighty slim.

The only thing anyone using this plug-in needs to be aware of is that all the services use dictionary translations and the translations themselves usually need a bit of translating. –So if you find this plug-in on someone’s blog you probably shouldn’t plan on doing a translation and then doing a copy and paste to post it somewhere else.

This plug-in also has Google site-map integration. I get the error “‘Google XML Sitemaps Generator for WordPress’ not detected.”

In spite of the fact that I consider site-maps to be very important for a serious blogger, I’m a dilettante and didn’t even notice that I hadn’t reinstalled after the last crash… Oops.

On the whole the Global Translator plug-in adds two useful functions to Wordpress. Not only does it provide a basic translation of your blog, it provides hours of entertainment. -Just translate a post to another language, then copy the resulting text and paste it into another translation service to bring it back to the original language and try and guess what the original post said. –If you’re multi-lingual it’s even funnier when you translate from something like English, to Russian, to Spanish and back.

Yeah I know. I’m way to easily amused.
