Stupid People

I have been reading Richard’s blog not just because he’s a friend, but because I have hosted it as a sub-domain of this site.

The customers Richard describes as being unable to deal with the new doors at Pioneer Loan are typical of the public in general and in all probability are untrainable.
I certainly know people that refuse to change the way they do things, but I would expect them to adapt to little things…. Like how to get though the doors and in to a place where they want to do business.

There is a neighborhood near Bonanza and Nellis that is zoned for horses. For that reason the Hispanics that move in think it’s alright to keep all kinds of livestock.
When zoning or animal control tells them they can’t have the 130 chickens they get rid of a few and wait to be fined.
A man who lives in that area bought a milk cow and then ponied up the $600 to apply for a variance.
The city rejected it unanimously.
In light of the rejection, he says he’s going to appeal, because the zoning law says he can have horses, so the city can’t legally disallow cattle?!?!?
Oh yes… He has to appeal to the same people who turned him down unanimously the first time.
In the mean time. —–Drum roll please….. he just bought a calf and was talking about buying another cow.

On a different note. I was reading the Galactic Poolhall Blog and came across this tidbit. About a guy in Joly Ol’ who electrocuted his wife during sex by hooking her up to an ac power strip and flipping the switch.
—But officer, I’ve stabbed/electrocuted him/her plenty of times and he/she never died before.

As the saying goes… You can’t fix stupid.

Modern Medicine

I have what everyone else I know has, some sort of non-specific flu.

One woman I know was told that it was a virus and she was no more contagious than anyone else. since she came back to work everyone has it.
Another woman was told that she had to stay home for three days and after that she would no longer be contagious.
I was told to take Benadryl and Ibuprofen and stay in bed until I felt better.
—–Three doctors, three different answers.

If you’re no more contagious than anyone else. How come every one around you gets sick?
If you’re no longer contagious after three days. How come you still have all the symptoms?
How does your quack, I mean doctor, know that you’re no longer contagious after exactly three days, if he isn’t positive as to exactly what it is that you’ve got?
And most importantly, does the bug know about the three day rule?

Bottom line:
The doctors have no idea exactly what they are dealing with. Without external symptoms they have no way of knowing you’re sick. They don’t run tests, because they’re not sure exactly what it is they should be testing for, much less how to treat it if they could find it. And they say you’re no longer contagious after three days, but something has to be causing the symptoms.

The pattern for me and a couple of other people has been, trouble sleeping, feeling weak, but better in the morning, then getting worse as the day wears on, combined with a constant cough.
This I am told can go on for weeks with a day or so worth of breaks in the middle.

Sip hot tea with honey and lemon, which seems to help the throat and even the sinuses. Keep warm and get as much rest as much as you can.
This may be old fashion advice, but it seems to work as well as anything. –Proving once again that my grandmother was smarter that my doctor.
—————

A man goes to the doctor with a really bad cold. The doctor looks at him, pokes and prods, and finally says, “Well you’ve got two choices. The first one is, I can write you a prescription for a very expensive medicine and order bed rest and it will be gone in 6 or 7 days.”
The man looked at the doctor and said “gee doc, I don’t have much money. So what’s the second choice?”
The doctor looks at him for a minute and says “Well the other choice is that you go home, and go to bed and it will run it’s course in about a week.”

Obama supporters gerrymander their way to victory

The power brokers in this great state of Nevada successfully managed to get the majority of Democratic delegates assigned to Obama.

By arranging Individual precincts in each of the major strip hotels, getting support from the state’s largest union, and rigging the vote so that the votes in the hotels counted five times as much as any other votes in the state, they got their man the extra delegates he needed.

Nevada doesn’t have a huge number of delegates but neither do most of the western states. The trick is to get enough small states to offset the larger states. A bit of gerrymandering here and vote fixing there and before you know it, you’ve pulled a Bush and stolen the election.

It’s good to be the king. But sometimes it’s better to be a king maker. You are in a position to make more money than you can spend, get jobs and contracts for your friends and family, and you’re not the one they behead when things go wrong.

What? You thought your vote mattered? —Riiiiight

Woman’s work

I told Rich I’d write some sort of drivel for his blog when I got around to it. Today he called me on it.
First a basic whine. —I’m at work, and my head is about to explode. The headache makes me want to vomit and the Excedrin is making a mess out of my stomach.

I forced myself to eat some Campbell’s chunky New England Clam Chowder.
You remove the plastic cover, remove the metal top, return the plastic cover, toss a napkin on top in case something pops, and nuke fit or about 2 minutes. Let it sit for a minute, stir and eat.

It doesn’t taste half bad, but it occurred to me that we have become so inured to food that runs from mediocre to nearly inedible, in exchange for speed of preparation, that good food tastes a bit odd.
Have you ever noticed how little canned vegetables taste like fresh vegetables?

I cook at home, and my friends look surprised when I tell them that I made an omelet for breakfast, or that I made chicken soup for my lady when she caught that flu that’s been going around.

To me this is reaction is peculiar at best. I’m single and have nobody to look out for me, but me. So, if I don’t want to cook, I have a couple of choices. I can eat out, or I can live on canned or frozen food? of unknown origin.

Being a guy I am not too particular about what I eat, I can alway cover it with ketchup. But just how many frozen pizzas can you eat before you run screaming from the kitchen? And just how many lines are you willing to stand in to avoid cooking?

I’ve had men I know tell me that cooking and such are “woman’s work.”
Question. What do you do when there’s no woman around? Do you go out for three meals a day? Do you take all your laundry to the dry cleaners? Do you hire a maid or a full time housekeeper?

This is a true story: A friend got a divorce and called me because, no matter how hard he looked, he couldn’t find the on-switch for the washing machine.

Just how the hell is a guy like that going to look out for himself? He can’t cook, he can’t do basic laundry and it’s not like he has the money to hire a housekeeper. Not after that divorce.
(For the record, her attorney chewed him up, spit him out and pissed on the pieces.)

Cooking, laundry, and the like may be woman’s work, but my clothes are clean, my stomach is full and I don’t have to run to my mother every time I lose a button.

Intel Classmate to be sold in India

As of Jan 26, the Intel Classmate, being made by HCL Infosystems, is to be sold in India as the MiLeap X.
In spite of the similarities HCL insists that while their’s may be based on the Classmate it’s an entirely different machine.

The MiLeap is a shade of brown instead of blue.
The MiLeap has an HCL logo instead of an Intel logo.

Both computers have a 7-inch LCD (liquid crystal display) screen with 800-pixel by 480-pixel resolution, a 900MHz Celeron M processor, Wi-Fi, and 2G bytes of flash memory for storage instead of a hard drive. They also use the same chipset, Intel’s 915GMS.

George Paul, executive vice president of HCL, acknowledged the MiLeap X can be considered a “derivative” of the Classmate PC since both computers use similar technologies, but said significant differences exist between the two products. He did not specify what those differences are. —I guess someone forgot to tell the Executive VP just what it is they’re trying to sell.

Ok, the MiLeap X runs Linux and is for sale to consumers in India, while the Classmate runs Linux and is designed to be sold to schools in developing countries.

They certainly sound like entirely different machines to me.

As a side note:
It seems the Indian government gave the OLPC a pass because there was no provision for teacher control, among other things.

Why I use Wordpress

I’m the admin for 11 blogs counting my own. While they all run Wordpress, everyone wants something a little different. Which is precisely why I chose Wordpress.

If you Google for “wordpress plugins” you get wordpress.org/extend/plugins, wp-plugins.net, along with personal sites like alexking.org.

If you Google for “wordpress themes” you get a nearly infinite number of sites featuring free themes. Or a mix of free and “premium”(pay-to-use) themes. I use the free ones.
Although the authors of many of the premium themes will customize them for you, unless you want something very special, I see no need to pay for one if all it is to be used for is a personal blog.

The overall color scheme and some layout can usually be modified using css. The rest of the theme will generally be written in PHP, making it relatively simple to modify.
—–Always keep a complete copy of the original theme, somewhere safe. This saves you having to download a fresh copy when you screw up.

There are always details that will drive you nuts until you figure them out.
The one than springs to mind is using “./****/***.jpg” to retrieve an image. This works fine on the main page, but it does not always work for permalinks or comments. You need to drop the leading dot and then things smooth out.

One other quirk / security feature is the capitalization of the user name. If the name is capitalized and you enter it in all lowercase Wordpress returns an Incorrect password error instead of an Invalid username.

All in all. For the average person it’s simple to set up and easy to use.
For the average volunteer admin these same features are a godsend, because sooner or later, these otherwise intelligent people will find a way to break either Wordpress, or more likely, the database, beyond repair and a full reinstall will be required.

Now, if I can only get some of these people who wanted a blog so badly, to write with some sort of regularity.

Mercedes

This is an attention getter Mercedes thought up to promote their latest line..
mercedes display

The model is all plastic but is very detailed.
Even knowing that it’s not a real car, I wonder how many people are willing to stand under it.

Tata Nano

Tata Motors of India just announced what is said to be the world’s cheapest car.
cheap car
The four-door, five-seater has a 33bhp, 624cc, engine at the rear.
The Tata Nano, will sell for 100,000 rupees or $2,500usd.

The environmentalist say that a cheap car like this will lead to more traffic and pollution.

Tata says the car has passed emission standards and would average about 50 miles to the gallon.
The Nano is expected to replace a number of small motor scooters.

The car is held together by adhesives instead of welding and the body is made up of sheet metal and plastic.
It has manual steering, hand crank windows, and no a/c.

This car is designed for Indian families.
At a whopping 33hp and a top speed of 70km/h (43mph) I hope they don’t have many hills where this is sold.
