Diet

I just read an article in the NY Times about an 8 year study that shows a low-fat diet won’t help you avoid cancer or heart disease. In spite of what the experts tell you, the rules are the same for everybody, “eat right, exercise and die anyway”.
The doctors involved said that if the women in the study had started younger and worked harder at it..blah blah blah.
The bottom line is simple, there are no miracle cures out there.
A guy named Jim Fix wrote about the benefits of jogging and dropped dead at a fairly young age, while jogging.
A friend of mine had a massive heart attack and may well be the record holder for the most stints ever placed in the human body. The reason he lived is because he walked long and hard everyday. I seems that there is another artery connected to the heart that will send out daughter arteries of some kind and take up some of the load. This explanation is probably somewhat inaccurate but in essence it discribes what happens.
Exercise is good, it strengthens the heart and lungs, it opens the arteries, it strengthens the muscles and helps you lose that extra fat so it doesn’t hurt so bad when you do things like standing or walking or even breathing.
Losing weight is simple (in theory), you just need to burn more calories than you take in… Sure sounds easy, don’t it.
I’m 6′4″ and weigh 310lbs, my knees hurt, my feet hurt and since I started on my blood pressure meds my circulation is impaired, do to a lack of pressure, on the up side I rarely get those massive headaches I used to live with.
Aside from the fact that I hate to exercise, my biggest problem is I like the taste of food and I do what most people do, I feed my mouth not my stomach.
I’ve decided that instead of eating what is supposedly “good for me”, I will make what I like and package it in portions, this way it’s a nuisance to thaw more than one serving at a time and maybe it’ll slow me down a bit.
Instead of getting a membership to a gym, that I’d find a thousand excuses not to use, I’ve started walking late at night, the cops slow down, but they haven’t stopped to talk yet. The real advantage to walking is that, when I get tired I can’t just sit down and watch TV, I’ve got no choice but to finish the walk, although at a much slower pace than I started.
We’ll see if I can stick with it.

Idiots

I know the world is full of stupid people, but why do I feel like I’m cursed to meet and greet each of them individually.
In Las Vegas the phrase “lost tourist” is the ultimate redundancy. But today they all seemed to be on the road. I got behind a motorhome that probably had more glass than my house, that was being driven by someone who drove by braile, one set of tires on the little white bumps at all times. The real problem was deciding which bumps he was driving by at any given moment. When I got around him I saw he was drinking coffee and talking to a woman, who was showing him something in the paper.
When I got done with some errands I stopped by the grocery store and guess who was there, I couldn’t help myself, I walked over and introduced myself and asked if they were lost, I gave them directions and then I asked how long their seeing eye dog had been sick. They looked confused and I explained that they drove like they were blind and were a major hazard on the road. The man got huffy and told me he was a retired major yada yada yada, and how he knew the sheriff and could have me arrested. I laughed and told him I was the sheriff’s son and that my father had never mentioned him, but we could get it all straightened out when he was stopped for DUI, because I had called him in as a possible. They both hurried into the motorhome and shut the door, I sat and watched as they drove off, running over a curb on the way out of the parking lot.
That motorhome is large enough so it may not be allowed on the dam, I don’t know the rules.
I honestly hope they get where they’re going without causing a major accident.

The sheriff is much too young to be my father, but before I got back in my car, a man walked up and asked if I was really the sheriff’s son because he had some kind of major crime to report, I told him that in this town he could trust the 911 operators. this seemed to make him feel better. He seemed completely rational and was apparently cold sober and I not only don’t know what the alledged crime was and I really could care less.
I’m home it’s quiet and the cats suddenly seem smarter than a lot of people I’ve seen lately.
I understand why some people refuse to leave their house.

Tired

I’m running on very short sleep, and I’m getting punchy. I just read an email I wrote last night sometime and completely forgot to send. It was what I would politely describe as incoherent, and I sent it anyway. The data was there, just not well phrased and a trifle disorganized.
The people who know me well expect this from time to time, between work, phone calls from people who don’t understand the basic concept of time zones and my natural weirdness, sleeping til noon after getting to bed early or not sleeping at all for a couple of days all seem perfectly normal.
I’m writing this, mostly to keep awake.

Did you know that alcohol actually makes you sleep worse not better?
From an article I read “And, if you have not been getting adequate sleep, alcohol increases the symptoms of sleep deprivation“.

Did you know that a groundhog breathes once every 4 minutes when they hibernate and the groundhog day thing comes from europe where they originally applied it to hedgehogs. Not only that, hibernation is not really sleep so some anilmals come out of hibernation to sleep so they can get much needed rest. I’m no longer jealous.

Vegas

I just read the top nine list over at the Las Vegas Poker blog and it got me to thinking.

When I was much younger I went to California with a friend, and I remember trying not to look like a tourist, so I wound up leaning over and whispering “what the hell’s last call?”.
In Las Vegas very few freestanding bars close and casinos simply shut down one or two of their five to a dozen or so bars, and while it’s definately illegal to drink and drive, I’ve never had a problem getting a go cup.
A town that runs full tilt 24/7 changes the way people see the world and leads to odd questions and comments when they get home.

What do you mean “last call”?
Did you remodel? The bathroom seems smaller.
What number do I dial for a “wake up call”?
Sorry dear. I was calling room service.
Why is it so dark outside? The sign across the street must be out.
Let housekeeping take care of it.
What do you mean the store’s closed? It’s only midnight. (me, in St. George, Utah)
Hey Joe. You know, if you’d get rid of the pool table you’d have room for at least a dozen slots.
This carpet is really dull, maybe you could get something in yellow, maroon and royal blue.

Comments

I keep comments off so I don’t have to read all the spammers B.S. but some sites seem to enjoy the contest.
The Las Vegas blog allows very limited comments and the Pawnshop blog has just started allowing limited comments, as well as pawnshop story submissions.
I just notice that the Angeleno blog allows comments.

I like the Pioneer Loan and Jewelry’s pawnshop blog’s legal disclaimer.

“Legal stuff:
We reserve the right to do anything we damn well please with any comments or submissions.”

They must have read M$’s privacy notice.
